How to Find Professors to Do Research With

You want to do research. Maybe it's for grad school, maybe it's an REU, maybe you just want to work on something real instead of another problem set. The hard part usually isn't the email. It's knowing who to send it to. Finding the right professor is most of the battle, and it's the part almost nobody teaches you. Here are five ways to build a list of professors worth contacting, plus how to tell which ones will actually write back.

Start from topics, not names

The classic mistake is to google something like "famous AI professors" and email the five biggest names in the field. Those people get hundreds of messages exactly like yours every term. When you start from names, you're competing with the entire internet for the attention of people who have none to spare.

Do the opposite. Before you look at a single professor, write down two or three specific questions or topics you genuinely want to work on. Not "machine learning" or "biology," but something you could argue about: how coral reefs recover after a bleaching event, why large language models hallucinate citations, what makes some city intersections far deadlier than others. Specific topics point you toward professors who have room in their inbox, because fewer people are chasing them.

Here's the claim worth stating plainly: the best research mentor for you is usually someone you've never heard of. Fame and fit are different things. The professor whose recent work lines up exactly with your question will teach you more, and answer you faster, than the one whose name you already knew.

Five places to look

Once you know your topics, here's where to find the people working on them. Use more than one of these. When the same name shows up in two places, that's a signal worth trusting.

Your department's website

Start close to home. Almost every department lists its faculty by research area, with a short blurb and a link to each person's lab. Read three lab pages end to end, not just the one-line summary. Look for a "prospective students" or "joining the lab" note, which tells you whether they're taking people and what they expect. These are your nearest opportunities and the easiest logistics: you can go to office hours, you can knock on the door, you can be a face instead of a name in a queue.

Google Scholar

Search your topic in Google Scholar and filter to the last few years. Watch for author names that keep reappearing across the results. Repetition means someone is actively building a line of work, not passing through. Click into a profile to check two things: are they still publishing in this area, and where are they now? Then follow the "cited by" links to trace the topic forward in time, into the living branches of the conversation rather than the founding papers everyone already cites.

Paper trails via OpenAlex

When a single paper genuinely excites you, don't stop there. Chase its neighbors: the same authors' other recent work, the papers they cite, and the newer papers that cite them. Professors you've already met

This is the highest-reply-rate channel, and students underuse it constantly. Think about the instructor of a course you did well in, a guest lecturer whose talk stuck with you, or your TA's advisor. You already have a little context and credibility with these people, which is worth more than any perfectly worded cold email. Warm beats cold every single time. If you can turn a cold email into a warm one, do it before you do anything else.

Department seminar schedules

Most departments post a weekly colloquium or seminar schedule, and it's a goldmine. These pages list exactly who is working on what right now, often a year or more before that work shows up as a published paper. Even better, show up to one. Attending a talk and asking a real question is the strongest cold-open there is. "I saw your talk on X and I've been thinking about Y" beats anything you can write in an email-only introduction.

How to judge fit before you email

Not every name you collect is worth an email. Before you write to anyone, spend five minutes checking three things.

Recency. Has this person published on your topic in roughly the last two years? A great paper from 2016 doesn't mean much if they've moved on since. You'd be pitching yourself for work they no longer do. Look at what's actually on top of their publication list.

Lab size. A huge, famous lab usually means you'd work day to day with a grad student or postdoc rather than the professor. That can be a genuinely good experience, but go in knowing it. A small or newly growing lab usually means more direct professor time and more room to shape what you do.

Evidence they work with students. Scan recent papers for undergraduate co-author names, look for "we thank our undergraduate researchers" in the acknowledgments, and check whether the lab page lists undergrads on its roster. A professor who has mentored students before is far more likely to say yes to another one.

The signals someone will actually reply

Here's the part most guides skip. Relevance isn't enough. A professor can be a perfect topical match and still never answer, because reachability is its own thing. You can read it off the same public records.

Active right now. Papers in the last year, not a decade ago. Someone in the middle of a productive stretch is thinking about their work daily and is more likely to engage with a sharp question about it.

Room for attention. This is the one people miss. An early-career professor building a lab reads and answers cold email, because they're actively looking for people. A professor with eighty thousand citations mostly can't, no matter how kind they are. Their inbox is a firehose. Attention saturation is real, and it's field-dependent, so calibrate against the norms of the area instead of one universal number.

Alignment with their trajectory. Match your interest to where their work is going, not where it's been. Their newest papers point at the questions they're excited about next. Aim there, not at the greatest hit from ten years ago that first put them on your radar.

Build a shortlist of 10–15, then write

Now turn all of that into a list. Don't stop at three names. When you only have three, a single non-reply feels personal, you start second-guessing yourself, and the whole project stalls out. Don't swing the other way and collect fifty, either. Past a certain point you can't research anyone properly, and your emails drift back toward generic, which is the exact problem you were trying to avoid.

Aim for ten to fifteen candidates, ranked. That's enough that any one silence means nothing, and few enough that you can actually read each person's work and write them something specific.
